چکیده

Health effects caused by ionizing radiations raise considerable concern among general public and radiation workers. To estimate ability of personal protective equipment (PPE) materials that reduce toxic effects of ionizing radiations, we developed an experimental bioassay system using Chinese Hamster V79 cells. The system developed here distinguished the biological effectiveness of X-ray that was significantly affected by elements composed of shielding materials. Survival of the cells exposed to sub-lethal dose of X-ray was enhanced more than 2 times when the X-ray was filtrated by a lead plate. Also filtration of the X-ray with a tungsten plate enhanced the cell survival more than three times. These results suggested the colony assay system developed here was useful for examination of the biological effectiveness of X-ray and the ability of PPE materials reducing the toxic effects caused by ionizing radiations.

Investigating Compliance With the Standard Principles of Using Personal Protective Equipment by Nurses Exposed to Chemotherapy Drugs

Background and Aims The increasing number of patients with cancer has led to the growing use of chemotherapy drugs. This fact was followed by a growing concern about the safety and adverse effects of these drugs on healthcare staff at risks for occupational exposure to chemotherapeutic agents.  This study investigated compliance with the standard principles of using Personal Protective Equipmen...

Methods of evaluating protective clothing relative to heat and cold stress: thermal manikin, biomedical modeling, and human testing.

Personal protective equipment (PPE) refers to clothing and equipment designed to protect individuals from chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive hazards. The materials used to provide this protection may exacerbate thermal strain by limiting heat and water vapor transfer. Any new PPE must therefore be evaluated to ensure that it poses no greater thermal strain than the curre...

Performance of materials used for biological personal protective equipment against blood splash penetration

For occupational safety, healthcare workers must select and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), protective clothing, and masks as countermeasures against exposure to infectious body fluids and blood splash. It is important for healthcare workers to ensure the protective performance of each PPE against penetration of pathogens. The International Standards Organization (ISO) 226...

POEM model application feasibility with Diazinon poison with using from cholinesterase activity level measurement of farmers in the west of Iran

Introduction: The most common of farmers' occupational exposure is exposure to pesticides. Organophosphate pesticides (OP) are widely used in agriculture to control pests. The main mechanism of Organophosphates (OPs) toxicity is irreversibly inhibiting of Butyl cholinesterase and acetyl cholinesterase. POEM model (Predictive Operator Exposure Model) was made to assess exposure and absorption of...
